What Exactly is the Star Ingredient, Blue Curaçao?
Blue Curaçao has become a staple for any home cocktail bar due to its strong citrus flavor and its unmistakable vivid blue color.
A Caribbean liqueur made using the dried peel of the Laraha citrus fruit is best used as a mixer rather than drunk straight, though you can have it on the rocks. Depending on the brand, its ABV is between 15 and 40%.
But How Does It Get That Bright Blue Color?
It should be no surprise that the Laraha citrus fruit is not blue! The bitter orange fruit is grown on the tiny island of Curaçao, about 60km off the Venezuelan coast near Aruba. The distilled liquor is clear, and color is added at the final production stage.
The most popular color is blue, followed by orange, which you may be familiar with; you can even get yellow or green curaçao! Colors were added as long ago as the 1920s, but it is believed that blue became the popular front runner in the 1960s.
Although no one can say for sure, the blue is most likely an homage to the stunning azure waters and blue skies that surround the Caribbean paradise—bringing a taste of the tropics to wherever you are enjoying your cocktails around the world.
